The Company
Spielbank Berlin – nearly four decades of history
Spielbank Berlin will celebrate its 40th anniversary in October 2015. Back in March 1975, ten partners founded the company Gustav Jaenecke KG for the purpose of running a casino in what was then West Berlin. The state of West Berlin granted the concession on 1 October of that year and gambling began at the Europa Center.
The fall of the Berlin Wall and the reunification of both Germany and Berlin not only enlarged the city - Spielbank Berlin also took the opportunity to regenerate and grow and relocated to its current premises at Potsdamer Platz in 1998. Today, the company also has establishments in Spandau, Wilmersdorf and Hasenheide and, since 2013, a fully-fledged casino at the base of the television tower. Spielbank Berlin is the city's only provider of classic gambling games such as poker, roulette and blackjack.
Visitors may also make use of the in-house Sternberg Theatre and its modern technology. It is an ideal venue for games evenings, press conferences, galas, concerts, celebrations and other events.
A large proportion of our takings goes to the city of Berlin. The casino has paid around €2 billion to the city since it was founded.
The remaining profits, however, are not only used to finance operations and pay the casino's more than 420 employees. For example, in 2013 and with the approval of its main shareholder, the Austrian company Novomatic AG, Spielbank Berlin donated half a million euros, which was mainly designed to promote sports. The Internationales Stadionfest (ISTAF) held at the Olympia Stadium, the football club 1. FC Union Berlin, world champion and Olympic medallist Robert Harting, handball team Füchse Berlin and volleyball team BR Volleys are just a few of the names that have and will continue to benefit.
Furthermore, Spielbank Berlin's advisory board, whose members include the honorary president of the German Olympic Sport Association Manfred von Richthofen, Bundestag member Frank Steffel and bank manager Karl Kauermann, has its own fund through which it supports voluntary work in Berlin year after year.
